What is orientation and mobility (O&M)?

O&M is a specialised field that helps people with low vision and blindness to navigate their environment safely and independently. It involves teaching people how to use their remaining vision effectively, as well as using other senses such as hearing and touch to get around.

What qualifications do you have?

I am a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS), which means I have met the highest international standards for training and expertise in the field of O&M.

Where do you provide O&M services?

As a Hobart-based Orientation and Mobility Specialist, I am available to provide services anywhere in Tasmania. This means I can work with clients in their homes, schools, workplaces, or the community. 

What age groups do you work with?

I work with people of all ages, including babies and children. I have a particular interest in working with young children to help them develop the skills they need to navigate their environment safely and independently as they grow.

What types of skills do you teach?

I teach a wide range of skills, including:

  • How  to use public transport
  • How to navigate busy streets
  • How to travel off-road
  • How to use a long cane

Yes, I can help you to navigate busy streets safely and confidently. I will teach you how to use your senses to identify potential hazards, cross controlled and uncontrolled road crossings.

Can you help me to travel off-road?

 Yes, I can help you to travel off-road safely and independently. I will teach you how to use a cane to navigate rural trails, identify potential hazards, and stay on the path.

Can you help me to develop my independence and confidence?

 Yes, I can help you to develop your independence and confidence. I will work with you to set goals, develop strategies, and build your skills so that you can navigate your environment safely and independently.

Do you work with babies?

 Yes, I specialise in orientation and mobility training for infants and toddlers. I understand the unique challenges and developmental needs of young children and can provide tailored strategies to support their mobility and independence.

Can you assist people with multiple disabilities?

 Absolutely. I have experience working with individuals who have a combination of disabilities, such as low vision, hearing loss, physical limitations, or cognitive challenges. I can develop personalized training plans that address their specific needs and help them navigate their environment safely and efficiently.
